Curriculum
At Woodley School and College, our inclusive curriculum is destination-led and life-skill focused, designed to equip every pupil with the knowledge, skills and experiences they need to communicate with confidence, be as independent as possible and have meaningful achievements throughout their time at school, in their next destination, and as they transition into fulfilling adult lives.
Our curriculum places learning for life at its heart. We recognise that preparing for adulthood outcomes should be a focus from 13 years old onwards, as set out in Part 3 of The Children and Families Act (2014) and the SEND Code of Practice Relationships Education, Relationships and Sex Education and Health Education Relationships and Sex Education Statutory Guidance. However, at Woodley, we embed this principle from the start of our pupils learning journey, ensuring that every stage of our pupils' educational journey builds purposefully towards independence, participation in their community, and the ability to lead healthy, meaningful lives.
At Woodley School & College we have two strands of learning: Learning Skills and Life Skills. Learning skills are our more academic focus and provide the cornerstone for life skill development. Life skills are the transferrable functional skills that enable our pupils to lead as independent a life as possible are they grow.
Pathways
Pupils at Woodley School & College are placed into one of eight pathways that best suits their needs, and their age. These Pathways are:
The Pathway model allows us to provide a curriculum that is adapted to the individual needs of our pupils, providing stretch and challenge and placing an emphasis on the life skills pupils need for success at their next destination.
Thematic Learning
At Woodley School and College, we use overarching themes to create opportunities for engaging, immersive learning. We aim to create an irresistible invitation to learn for our pupils. The thematic topics have been carefully chosen, to reflect the local context of the pupils, with each theme being broad enough in scope to ensure the learning opportunities can be tailored to the individual pupils.
At the end of each theme, we have a curriculum project (Project Page) linked to the theme. All pupils participate in the project through the term, using the project as a driver for meaningful learning throughout the term, for both learning and life skills. The learning opportunities are adapted in Pathways and classes for the individual learners to ensure there is an appropriate level of challenge for each pupil, and to reflect each Pathways learning focus.
Themes run a on three-year cycle, with subject coverage running over three years. To ensure progression for pupils, each Key Stage within each Pathway has a termly overview which details the learning opportunities and learning outcomes for the term ahead.
Pupil Opportunity Plan (POP)
At Woodley School & College, each pupil has an individual ‘Pupil Opportunity Plan’ (POP). The POP identifies opportunities for life skill development and exposure to new experiences, while also working towards their EHCP outcomes. These opportunities are woven throughout the learning of the term for that individual pupil.
From Year 10 Pupils have will start accessing accreditation, we use AQA Unit Awards and OCR. We offer core English and Maths, alongside thematic units aligned to the terms theme. Units are offered at:
- PreEntry Level
- Entry Level
If higher levels are suitable for individual pupils we would offer them units at the required level.
